The modern granny stitch is a fun take-off of the classic granny square and granny square stitch. This is a quick and easy stitch that can be used for any project! I like using this stitch for blankets but it would also be a fun stitch for scarfs, washcloths, sweaters, and so much more!

For this stitch, all you will need to know is how to do a chain,  do a double crochet, and a double crochet stitch together. If you can do these stitches you can do the modern granny stitch! Remember when doing a stitch like the double crochet stitch together you can crochet together any number of stitches. You just have to make sure to not fully finish the stitch until the very end. This pattern will crochet 2 and 3 stitches together.

What I will be using for this stitch

  • Size H hook (5.0 mm)
  • Medium weight yarn

Stitches that you need to know for this pattern are

Ch – Chain

Dc – double crochet

Dc[#]TOG – double crochet [#] together

This pattern will produce a simple test swatch pattern. This is a small block that is used to test your skill at a stitch before committing to a larger project. Once you have gotten the hang of the stitch you can modify the test swatch pattern to any size that you would like! This pattern can be manipulated by chaining any multiple of 3 plus 1 extra stitch.

How the pattern can be manipulated

 3 + 1

Pattern

There is a visual representation of each part of the pattern below the instructions for each row.

Start by chaining 19.

Row 2

Make 1 dc into the first dc. * ch 2. Dc3tog  [three dc stitches together]. Repeat from the * until you have reached the end of the row ending with ch2. Dc2tog in the last two stitches. Ch 3. Turn.

Row 3

Make 3 dc into the ch 2 space of the previous row. * 3 dc into the next ch 2 space. Repeat from * until the end of the row ending with 1 dc in the last stitch. Ch 4. Turn.

Row 4

*Make dc3tog in the top of the 3 dc stitches of the previous row. Ch 2. Repeat from * until the end of the row ending with ch 1. Dc in the top of the ch 3 space. Ch 3. Turn.

Row 5

Make 1 dc in the first stitch. * Make 3 dc in the ch 2 space of the previous row. Repeat from * until you have reached the end of the row ending with 2 dc in the last stitch. Ch 3. Turn.

Row 6

Make 1 dc in the first stitch. * Ch 2. Dc3tog. Repeat from * until the end of the row ending with ch 2. Dc2tog in the last two stitches. Ch 3. Turn.

Continue to repeat rows 3-6 until you have reached the desired length. For the sake of practice and for this pattern repeat these rows once more.
