Kids Winter Crochet Cap – Pattern

Here is a simple crochet cap. This cap is very warm and comes in very handy in winter. There are no gaps/holes in the stitch that is used, so air does not pass through. It covers up the ears fully, unlike the traditional winter hats, which need to be pulled down all the time.

 

 

 

PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS

Yarn used: 5 mm acrylic yarn in 2 colors

Hook: 5 mm crochet hook

Ch: Chain

St: Stitch

HDC: Half Double Crochet

DC: Double Crochet

(no. of St): Total number of stitches at the end of the row

*…. *: Repeat the instructions in between the stars

SECTION 1: Back of the Head

Row 1: Ch3, slip in St1

Row 2: Ch2, 9HDC in the center, Slip in St1               (no. of St:10)

 

Row 3: Ch2, *2HDC in next St, 1HDC* x 4, 2HDC in last St, slip in St1          (15)

The next row will divide the cap into 5 parts. Always make Ch2 instead of HDC in the beginning of the row.

Row 4: *1HDC, 2HDC in the next St, 1HDC, Ch1*x 5, slip in St1        (4 HDC in each part)   (25)

 

Row 5: *1HDC, 2HDC in next St 2, 2HDC, Ch1* x 5, slip in St1          (5 HDC in each part)   (30)

Row 6: *2HDC, 2HDC in St 3, 2HDC, Ch1* x 5, slip in St1      (6 HDC in each part)   (35)

 

Row 7: *2HDC, 2HDC in St 3, 3 HDC, Ch1* x 5, Slip in St1     (7 HDC in each part)   (40)

Row 8: *1HDC, 2HDC in St2, 3HDC, 2HDC in St6, 1HDC, Ch1*x 5, slip in St1(9 HDC in each part)(50)

 

Row 9: *4HDC, 2HDC in St5, 4HDC, Ch1* x 5, slip in St1       (10 HDC in each part) (55)

Row 10:*1HDC, 2HDC in St2, 6HDC, 2HDC in St9, 1HDC, Ch1*x5, slip in St1(12HDC in each part)(65)

 

SECTION 2: Crown to Forehead

Row 11: Ch3, turn the work, slip in St 3, turn the work again so that you work on the right side in the next row.

 

Row 12: CH3, 3DC in same St, skip 2, slip in St 3, *skip 2, make shell of (3DC, Ch1, 3DC) in St3, skip 2, slip in St3* x 6, skip 2, 4DC in St3. Cut yarn. Each part has 2 shells.

Row 13: Change yarn. *SC, make shell of (3DC, Ch1, 3DC), SC in the center of next shell* x 7

 

Repeat Rows 12 and 13 until the desired length.

 

 

 

SECTION 3: Ears

In this section make 3 rows of DC from one ear to the back of the head. This will give extra coverage to the ears and neck. Make 3 rows of DC on both sides of the cap.

 

SECTION 4: Tie

Make a chain long enough to run along the chin. Make DC along the chain. The Pattern is *DC, Ch1, Skip 1* repeat.

 

Stitch a button on the other side to secure the tie.
